A prolapse is when the bladder , bowel or uterus bulges into the vaginal space.

It tends to occur when the muscles and other tissues that give support are weakened.  You might feel a discomfort, heaviness, dragging sensation or bulging.  The main causes are childbirth especially multiple pregnancies, those with a chronic cough or a history of constipation causing straining on the toilet.  There can be a family disposition to prolapse due to genetic tissue type.

Physiotherapy treatment will help to train the strength and endurance of the muscles and we would give advice on avoiding straining and protecting the pelvic floor when coughing or sneezing.  We can also advise on general exercise.
