Many women suffer from bowel issues

Although common, it is not usually spoken about in the way that urinary issues are.

In women, childbirth is the most common cause particularly if you have suffered from a 3rd or 4th degree tear or nerve damage but there are many other issues.  Chronic constipation/straining can cause the pelvic floor muscles to weaken.  Being overweight also puts excessive pressure on them.  Tummy problems such as I.B.S. can cause diarrhoea which can cause leakage if the sphincter muscle is weak.

At Sutton Cross Physiotherapy, we have a women’s health physiotherapist who deals with bowel issues.  We will first take a thorough history and then do an assessment to find out the cause of the problem.

Treatments for bowel issues can include

  • pelvic floor strengthening via exercises or using muscle stimulation
  • defaecation techniques
  • biofeedback
  • soft tissue therapy
  • nerve mobilisations
  • advice on improving fitness and mobility.

You can make an appointment to see Linda by booking a women’s health appointment online or calling 018063030.
